Making hard content moderation decisions: lessons learned from the first year of the Facebook oversight board
The Oversight Board was created in 2020 to help Facebook answer some of the most difficult questions regarding online speech. Over the past year, the board has grown as an institution and started issuing binding decisions and non-binding policy recommendations alike. In doing so, the board has encountered many challenges and opportunities -- some foreseen and others not -- that are worthy of reflection. Exploring these lessons will help identify some of the promising avenues to uphold human rights in the digital age as well as ongoing areas of concern.
